How to Sell Digital Downloads on Etsy: Your First Listing

Take one original printable from usable files to a listing you can test.

To sell digital downloads on Etsy, prepare an original file, create a digital listing with clear previews and delivery details, then test whether buyers understand and can use the offer. Start with one product you can finish and explain. If you're still choosing a direction, compare our seven digital products to sell on Etsy first.

We'll use one example throughout: an original garden-journal paper pack with two patterned sheets and one page of cut-out labels. Someone can print the pages and use them in a personal journal.

Before you start

Check whether you can open a shop and receive Etsy payments where you live. Follow the current setup requirements shown to you, including any applicable setup charge. Etsy's shop-opening guide is the place to check these details.

Your product also needs to meet Etsy's Creativity Standards. Use your own original designs and check the rights to any fonts, artwork or other material you include. Buying a bundle of someone else's work doesn't make it your original design.

1. Describe one thing the buyer can use

Give the download a clear purpose before adding more pages. In our example, the buyer wants coordinated papers for a garden journal. They need to see the style, the included pieces and how those pieces could work together.

A draft offer might read: “Three original garden-journal printables: two patterned papers and a sheet of cut-out labels, supplied as A4 and US Letter PDFs. Print and trim them at home. No physical item is shipped.”

That is enough to start making a sample. You can expand the collection after you learn which parts people use.

2. Prepare the files you intend to deliver

For this example, you could prepare three files: garden-journal-A4.pdf, garden-journal-US-Letter.pdf and start-here.txt. Each PDF would contain the same three designs at the stated paper size. The short text file would explain which PDF to choose, how to print it and how to contact you.

Open those exported files, print a copy and trim the labels. Check that the text stays legible and the layout fits the paper. Ask another journal maker to use the delivered version without you explaining each step.

Etsy supports PDF and TXT uploads for digital listings, along with formats such as ZIP. Instant-download listings allow up to five files, each no larger than 20 MB. Buyers see the filenames, so name them clearly. Confirm the current limits in Etsy's digital-listing guide.

For more on file instructions and access, read how to make a digital download clear.

3. Show what the download makes possible

Make your previews from the product you have prepared. For the journal pack, show the full set, a close view of the labels and a simple journal spread made with the printed pages. Include an image that names the file formats, paper sizes and digital-only delivery.

A styled photo can help someone picture the result. It should also leave them able to tell what they receive. If the photo includes scissors, a notebook or decorations, explain that these aren't included.

The same principle applies to an accessory sewing pattern or a crochet pattern: show a finished item made from the instructions, then explain that the buyer receives the pattern.

4. Build a listing around the actual download

Once you're registered as a seller, Etsy's current route is Shop Manager → Listings → Add a listing. Choose Digital files and complete the relevant listing details. Etsy's listing instructions explain the current fields.

For the ready-made journal pack, choose an instant download and upload the finished files while creating the listing. Made-to-order digital items are delivered after the custom work is complete. Choose the format that matches your offer.

A plain title such as “Printable Garden Journal Papers and Labels” gives a buyer something concrete to assess. In the description, explain the included pages, file formats, sizes, printing requirements and permitted use. Choose an accurate category and tags that describe the product.

Use Save as Draft to keep the listing while you finish checking the files, previews and description.

5. Check the costs before choosing a price

As checked on 18 October 2026, Etsy charges $0.20 USD to create or renew a listing, whether or not it sells, and a 6.5% transaction fee on a sale. That 6.5% isn't the whole bill: setup and payment-processing charges can also apply. Use Etsy's current fees to check all the charges relevant to your country and bank account.

Then account for software, any licensed assets, preparation and support. A file can be sold more than once, but that doesn't remove the work of creating and maintaining it.

Compare similar offers to understand what buyers can choose. Check what each includes before treating its price as a useful comparison. A single sheet and a coordinated pack with two paper sizes are different offers.

Write down your assumptions. You can replace them with actual costs and time as the shop develops.

6. Test the offer before building a bigger collection

When the files, previews, description and price are ready, select Publish to make the listing live. Keep the first test small so you can learn from the offer before making a bigger collection.

You've already checked whether someone can open and print the files. Now show the real preview, contents and price to people who make journals, through a channel where sharing your own work is welcome. Ask what they would use the pack for and what they would choose instead. Keep track of what you showed, who saw it and what they did.

If the listing gets little response, check whether suitable buyers actually encountered it. If they saw it but misunderstood the contents, improve the explanation. If they understood it and preferred another product, investigate why. Our guide to testing a side hustle idea explains how to interpret those early observations.

Before you publish

  • The designs are yours, and any included assets have suitable permissions.
  • The delivered files open and print at the advertised sizes.
  • The previews match the files and make digital delivery clear.
  • The description says what buyers receive and what they need.
  • The price accounts for the costs and work you expect.
  • You have a practical way to answer a buyer's first question.

Start with a useful, understandable download. If the garden-journal example fits your skills, explore printable papers and pieces for junk journals for a related product direction. Your first listing gives you something specific to improve.
