SELLING DIGITAL PRODUCTS

Platforms to Sell Digital Products: Where Should You Start?

Choose a first selling route for one PDF, printable or editable template.

When you compare platforms to sell digital products, start with how the first buyer will find you. For an original PDF pattern or printable, Etsy is worth investigating if people already search its marketplace for that kind of project. Gumroad offers a direct selling route when you can send interested people to a product page. Both choices still depend on whether you can receive payouts and deliver the product as described.

Suppose you've made an original book-sleeve sewing pattern. The PDF is ready, someone else has followed it, and you have photos of the finished sleeve. This is a hypothetical example, but it gives us a specific decision: where should that first offer go? If you're still deciding what to make, start with our comparison of digital products to sell on Etsy.

Choose a place where you can reach the right buyer

For the book-sleeve pattern, an Etsy listing is one route to investigate. Look at how comparable projects appear in search. Are people looking for a pattern they can sew, a finished sleeve, or a free tutorial? Those are different buyers. Your first image and title should make it clear that the buyer is getting a pattern.

An accessory sewing pattern should show the finished project, explain who can make it and state that the purchase is a digital pattern. On Etsy, digital designs must meet its Creativity Standards. Uploading somebody else's pattern does not make it your own design.

A marketplace gives buyers a way to search and browse. You'll still need a suitable offer and a way to make it visible. Before choosing Etsy, think of a few searches a sewist might use and look at the products they find. The point is to understand the shopping context, rather than assume a new listing will receive traffic.

Use direct checkout when you have a way to bring visitors

Now suppose you share paper-craft projects and readers sometimes ask for your printable pages. A printable paper pack for junk journaling could fit a direct product page linked from those posts or a newsletter. Buyers have already seen your work; the page needs to show what the pack contains and let them buy it.

Gumroad is one option for that route. You can point people to the specific product from your site, posts or emails. Its pricing page distinguishes direct sales from purchases through Gumroad Discover, which carry a different fee. Don't base a direct-selling plan on Discover finding the first customers for you.

You don't need a particular follower count to consider direct selling. You do need a plausible way to reach people who want this product. An audience interested in unrelated posts may bring fewer useful visits than a small group already asking about your projects.

Check payouts before comparing fees

A platform is only useful if you can receive the money. Check the Etsy Payments country list and Gumroad's payout requirements for your location before building your offer around either service. An English product page or a price in US dollars doesn't establish that you're eligible to sell or withdraw funds.

Gumroad's payout guide describes bank or PayPal options that depend on country, alongside verification requirements. The payment methods offered to a buyer at checkout are a separate question from how you receive your earnings.

Then work out the charges for your actual selling route. A percentage in a comparison headline may leave out a fixed fee, payment processing or an account setup charge. These are the main items to check:

On a small screen, scroll sideways to read the comparison.

Fee sources checked 20 October 2026. Amounts below are in USD; this is not a complete bill for every seller.
Selling routeMain published chargesWhat else to check
An Etsy listing$0.20 to create or renew a listing, plus a 6.5% transaction fee on a sale.Payment processing is separate and varies by bank location. A one-time shop setup fee may apply; its amount is shown during onboarding.
A standard Gumroad direct sale10% + $0.50. Its Help page lists card processing separately at 2.9% + $0.30.The payment method matters. Read the applicable processing charges rather than treating 10% + $0.50 as an all-in figure. Gumroad lists no monthly fee.
A Gumroad Discover sale30%, including the transaction's processing fees. This is the Discover route, rather than the direct sale you bring through your own product link.

The figures come from Etsy's fee policy and Gumroad's fee guide. For a seller with a US bank account, the Etsy Payments policy lists processing at 3% + $0.25 per order, on the gross amount including applicable tax and shipping. A US customer or a price in dollars doesn't make that rate apply to every seller. Advertising, currency conversion and other applicable charges can also change the result.

Use a possible selling price to calculate what remains after the applicable charges. Keep preparation, customer support and the cost of reaching buyers in your notes too. A small difference in fees won't solve an offer that suitable people never see.

Check what happens after payment

For the book-sleeve example, the delivery needs to include the promised pattern and instructions. Etsy's digital-listing guide allows up to five files of 20 MB each for an instant download, including PDF and ZIP. Check the exported package against those limits before advertising it.

On Gumroad, the buyer's receipt links to the purchased content. The download page may ask them to confirm the email address used at checkout. Make sure your description and instructions match that handoff, including which file they should open first.

An editable product adds another step. With editable baby-shower templates, explain where buyers edit the design, what account or software they need and whether any paid features are involved. Check that you're permitted to sell the template and the assets it contains. Accepting payment doesn't establish those permissions.

Ask someone to follow the handoff using the files and instructions you intend to provide. Can they find the download, open it and get to work? Our guide to making the download clear covers the details buyers need before purchasing.

Put one offer in front of suitable people

For the finished sewing PDF with no existing audience, we'd investigate Etsy first: relevant searches, competing offers, seller eligibility and the complete cost of a listing. Once that route makes sense, use our first Etsy digital-listing guide for the setup and file-preparation steps.

For the paper-craft creator whose readers already ask for printables, we'd investigate a direct product page first. Make the offer easy to understand, check payouts and delivery, then share it with those readers where promotion is welcome.

Record how many suitable people saw the offer, which questions they asked and whether anyone bought. If hardly anyone reaches the page, you haven't learned much about willingness to pay. Our guide to testing one offer before expanding helps you decide what to change next.

Choose one route you can explain and test. A clear first offer will give you more to work with than several storefronts with no plan for bringing buyers to them.
